Be grateful for the ordinary things

Exploring how to be grateful for the small things in life

Summary

The real key to happiness and gratitude is to find value in the small and ordinary things in life.

Being a parent of three children can teach you a lot about patience, faith, and gratitude.

I particularly remember an occasion when my wife and I took the kids to the park, we had an awesome time together, but when the time came to leave the mood change. It was not long before tears started to flow out of the two eldest children, they did not want to leave, they were sad that the moment had passed. At that moment I remembered a quote from Dr. Seuss “Don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened.”

It seems common sense to be happier when one is grateful for the things we have, rather than when you are lamenting that you don’t have enough. Most time people think that gratitude is a feeling that follows positive events, but in reality, it is a practice that brings forth happiness. One can actively choose to feel gratitude, one way to practice this is to tell yourself that you have enough, or more than enough.

By focusing on the things that we already have and trying to understand that we can feel just as happy if we have less one develops an aptitude of constant gratitude.

The real key to happiness and gratitude is to find value in the small and ordinary things in life.
